Frequently Asked Questions

Please email info@connectgenomics.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

The type of testing I order for patients is vastly different from 23andMe. This is clinical/medical grade genetic testing that can be diagnostic, which means the technology and interpretation of results are held to a higher standard than 23andMe. Clinical genetic testing typically has clinical utility - meaning the results can impact your medical management. Sometimes, a genetic test result may also help you get certain services covered by your health insurance, such as more frequent surveillance such as MRIs, to help detect potential health issues earlier and improve outcomes.

Compared to 23andMe, this clinical genetic testing is significantly more comprehensive - meaning it is looking at a lot more areas of your DNA. Whole Genome Sequencing and interpretation looks at all regions of your DNA.

From pre-conception to pregnancy, childhood diseases as well as adult - I am well versed in a wide variety of patient indications. Rare diseases can be identified at any time in our life stages. I am able to work with you and your care team to try to identify a genetic cause for rare or inherited disease, and help integrate any new information in to your daily life and continued medical care.

Cost of testing depends on many factors, such as the test ordered and chosen billing method (self-pay, or billed through insurance). For patients with commercial insurance, the laboratory will perform a benefits investigation (BI) and contact the patient if their out-of-pocket responsibility is estimated to be $100 or more. Most patients do not spend more than $250-350 for a genetic test since the laboratories try to make the pricing accessible if insurance does not cover the cost (they bill insurance at a higher price).

The cost of counseling services at Genetic Counseling Private Practice varies depending on the type of service you need. Please contact us directly to discuss our fees and any available discounts based on financial need. Unfortunately I do not accept insurance at this time. Fees range from $100-$650.

I offer a free 15 minute consultation to ensure it is the right fit and I can help address your concerns or questions.

I have partnered with the following high quality supplement companies that have a proven track record of quality testing and assurance to be able to offer discounts to the Connect Genomics community. I will never encourage a patient to purchase a supplement, but for those who have asked for my opinion, I have compiled this list of supplements I personally use. I have extensively researched these supplements and companies.

Supplements

I believe supplements should be used with caution and care. I often help patients understand which foods can provide them with natural sources of vitamins and minerals. Certain genetic variants or health conditions can impact metabolic pathways related to using nutrients in the body efficiently and there are many companies marketing this testing. The only nutrition related genetic test I recommend is Genate, which can be used by anyone, though it is marketed for women.

If you're going to drink alcohol, consider taking this probiotic before drinking. This genetically modified probiotic works in the gut to break down the alcohol byproduct (acetaldehyde) that causes a hangover and damages the brain, before it gets there.
